Looking for a web design consultant
When starting a web design project or when you have concept, you will likely find yourself at a point where you need an experienced ear. An experience ear would help you shape your ideas and also provide advice as to what technology to use. You will need to have some sort of stubbornness when working with some consultants. Most new ideas are met with resistance.
Make sure you are certain of your idea, and that no criticism will stop you. For the web design process, a consultant may assist you in bringing your idea together into a mockup. This should be done whether he/she thinks your idea is not going to work. Do not be let anyone stop you. Some of the greatest ideas have been birthed amongst great doubt and resistance.
Hiring a web design consultant
There are a few things that you will need to be conscious of when hiring a web design consultant. It is not necessarily their own skills that you may be after. Oftentimes you will find that you need something that they cannot provide. In such cases, they would either be able to advise you on how best to approach the project; at the very least point you in the right direction.
This may come in the form of just meeting them to discuss your thought. They would be able to help you make sense of them in a technical way. For instance, we had a conversation with businesses that were looking for expensive solutions for a simple problem. At the end of it all, we explained how they could create the same solution in a cheaper way, that would also save them on monthly premiums.
There was no obligation attached to this conversation. This information could then be taken and used with a developer in a different company if they so desired.
Shop around
If you are not in a rush to get a project off the ground, it is always advisable to speak to a few consultants before settling on one. You may find that the first person you speak to is a perfect fit. That would be great but is seldom the case. Here are some of the things to consider when you shop around:
- Do they understand your project?
- Do they seem like they could own and drive it as if it were their own project?
- Do you like their creativity?
- What is the cost of working with them? Not just financially
- Will they finish it within the agreed timeline?
- Can they work within your budget?
You would probably not know all of these through observation. Make sure you ask the right questions. They don’t have to be direct questions. Just discuss things that require these attributes to be shown.
Availability
The web design process can be a very rigorous one, you need someone who is available to walk you through it all. This doesn’t always mean meeting up at every opportunity. You need to get someone who is available over the phone, on Skype and to meet up when possible. Most projects are very time oriented, so the quicker you get this done, the better for all involved.
I prefer clients who know what they want. No one wants to be constantly having to redesign something due to change of mind or external ideas.
Experience and contacts
Getting someone who has relevant experience is very important. You do not want to be getting web design advice from a plumber or vice versa, unless of course they can do both. On the other hand, having relevant contacts will also help. For most of our clients, when we can’t do the work they need, we have someone who we can recommend.
At the end of the day, we take pleasure in your idea doing well. It makes us look good too!
